Immunology basic laboratory tests

Output of the Project KEGA 038UK-4/2019 Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic

Immunology a ndash; basic laboratory tests provide theoretical knowledge and the most common practical methods used in immunological laboratories. Laboratory techniques used in immunology make it possible to identify components of innate and acquired immunity, humoral and cellular immunity. The reasonable indication of laboratory tests and the ability to make a correct diagnosis on time is significant in terms of patient prognosis. This textbook is dedicated to English speaking students and teachers interested in laboratory immunology. It allows readers to choose their own pace of study and to get feedback through control questions included at the end of each chapter.

Anatomy of the Urogenital System

The textbook was composed for the pre graduate medical students as the basic educational material. It contains the solid theoretical basis of the anatomy of the urogenital system with a focus on clinical application. The textbook has four chapters. The first chapter describes the organs of the urinary system, the second and the third deals with the male and female genital system, respectively. Each organ is described as for the position and relations, external description, internal structure (or the wall), blood supply, lymph drainage, and innervation. The theoretical parts are completed by clinical columns. The fourth chapter contains the review questions that may help students verify their knowledge. Although the textbook contains schemas, photographs of formalin-fixed cadaveric specimens and modified figures from public domain, Henry Gray a #39;Anatomy of the Human Body a #39; (Philadelphia: Lea a Febiger, 1918), it is necessary to use the anatomical atlas, too (Sobotta a #39;s, Gilroy a #39;s, Netter a #39;s or Gray a #39;s atlas of human anatomy). Only parallel usage of the textbook and the atlas is effective and may lead to the optimal study result. We believe that students will find this textbook to be valuable material for their study and review of anatomy.

A to Z GLOSSARY OF IMMUNOLOGICAL TERMS

Output of the Projects KEGA 038UK-4/2019 and KEGA 032UK-4/2019 Ministry of Education, Slovak Republic
The immune system, together with the nervous and endocrine systems, forms one of the essential systems needed to maintain the body's existence. The immune system tries to ensure that all processes in the body take place physiologically, correctly, and therefore can be considered a vital system. In the field of immunology, many new findings are being added and therefore it is important to know the most commonly used immunological terms contained in this publication.

The cells of the specific immunity are the lymphocytes that are responsible for humoral and cell-mediated immunity. Antibodies are molecules of the specific immune system. They have the ability to recognise foreign molecules on the surface of pathogenic microorganisms. Basic antibody structure, antibody classes and their functions are the content of this interactive presentation. Through the set of test questions the students can verify the acquired knowledge with the possibility of feedback.

Complement

Complement system is one of the essential effector systems of innate non-specific immunity. The main components of complement are activated step by step by converting the inactive form to the active enzymes. The result of this cascade is massive amplification of the response and activation of the cell-killing membrane attack complex (MAC) and lysis of the target cell.
The interactive presentation contains study material about ways of complement activation, determination of its activity and a set of the test questions. Through these questions the students can verify the acquired knowledge with the possibility of feedback.

In non-specific defence, the most important barrier to the spread of microorganisms is their destruction by phagocytes. Phagocytosis is the ability of professional phagocytes to recognize, absorb, kill and degrade foreign material.
The interactive presentation contains study material about cells that provide immune responses and a set of test questions. Through these questions the students can verify the acquired knowledge with the possibility of feedback.

Heart and respiratory system - study quide

This study guide has been prepared for medical students as a basic educational material for the anatomy practicals and anatomy exam. The first chapter provides introduction to the cardiovascular system, the heart and basic description of the circulations. The second chapter deals with the organs of respiratory system.
The text is fulfilled by the photographs of formalin fixed cadaveric preparates used during the anatomy practicals in our department, however, it is necessary combine the study with using of anatomy atlases (Sobotta a acute;s, Gray a acute;s, Gilroy a acute;s or Netter a acute;s atlas of human anatomy). Several figures of joints and ligaments are retrieved from public domein of Gray a acute;s Anatomy of human Body (1918) and Servier Medical Art. The last part of the study guide contains a set of review questions which can help the students to check their knowledge. We hope you will find this study guide useful material for your individual stud and review.

Microbiology - principal and interpretation of laboratory examination

Textbook for supplementary study in microbiology, clinical microbiology and laboratory diagnostics of microbial diseases.
The most important part of the work of doctors in clinical microbiology is to cooperate with other clinical practitioners. Cooperation is necessary in the interpretation of laboratory test findings to determine the role of an isolated and identified microorganism in the pathogenesis of the given disease process. The second completed edition of the textbook implements a specific chapters about the tests and interpretation of laboratory exam in some important clinical diseases. Our intention was to spread the knowledge for better understanding of the role of microbiology in the diagnostical process.
